Depression will visit many of us during the course of our lives.
Sometimes it is a situational depression, linked to an event or incident that has had a major impact on life. Other times there doesn’t seem to be any obvious trigger, but we find ourselves in the depths of despair, lacking energy, unable to concentrate, feeling hopeless, and struggling to stay connected to the world around us. Occasionally it will also impact our sleeping patterns, appetite, and ability to concentrate.
Many people living with depression describe it as being immersed in a thick, dark fog that colours the way they see the world. This can lead to poor performance and irritability in the work place and broken friendships. In can also impact a romantic relationship, making emotional connection difficult and sexual intimacy almost impossible. If children are involved, even basic parenting tasks become an overwhelming burden.
Our understanding of depression and resources to treat it have improved markedly over the last fifty years. Medication is an option, however at MGA Counselling Services, we believe that medication is the last resort. Regular counselling appointments, a good self-care routine, compassionate friends, and a mindful approach to life will often be enough to get you through. If medication is needed, we will work closely with your GP to ensure that all of us are working together.
